Food Tasting

Filed under: Groom's — sunshine at 12:55 am on Tuesday, August 15, 2006

Organising a wedding dinner is no piece of cake. Especially when it is one’s own. From day one, which was getting the reservation for the banquet hall, to the actual day, is a series of different steps that is making a rather important impression on me.

I am learning a great deal from this. One of the things is that the choice of dishes is so important, but at the same time, it is not. Ironic. I used not to care whatever was served and sometimes even to the point of being snobbish about the food, saying that “why waste the money on that dish… etc”.

Now I realise something. When Jin and I sat down to consider the dish we were thinking a lot about what we wanted. When we actually sat down on that dinner table for the food tasting, it dawned on me that the whole thing was for the guests . Yes, all for the guests. I still feel a bit awed by that realisation.

Now I can really appreciate the kind care and consideration couples and their planners go through to pick the dishes for the dinner banquet. Her parents, my grandparents and parents and a friend were at the table. Each one making very nice and considerate comments. It was truly one of my most enjoyable moments. The evening’s chief waiter who attended to us was really professional and courteous, addressing me as sir and at my every whim. It was nice, and I felt really like royalty.

My dad too, usually the person in charge in the family, decided to keep a low profile and let me do most of the talking and decision making. Thanks dad. I felt really ‘grown-up’.

I must say, after coming to this stage- the food tasting, that Jin and myself have the wish that whoever we get to invite would really enjoy the dinner. Yes, eventhough the food is besides the point, but as a tribute to our honoured guests, we wish that you would enjoy the food, which is the very least our token of gratitude for your attendance.

Well, got to go rest now. Must get ready for a new day. Some students to tackle in the morning.

It was a really good dinner and I hope with all my heart that our guests will enjoy it when the day comes. Do stay on for the dessert! It’s really good.

A word of caution. The food might not be the same quality or quantity on the wedding day… sad but true…imagine cooking for 10 people vs cooking 500 people….one wok cook all….
